Slot Efficiency
Slot efficiency is the goal of maximising the number of slot switches that can be constructed while avoiding the violation of the constraints that are predefined. These constraints include, for example the minimum operational delay (usually expressed as scheduling delays) fairness, equity, access, competition, environmental goals and more. The process of distributing slots can be complex, and optimizing it to achieve the desired performance metrics requires careful examination of the factors involved.
In general, the process begins by identifying the types of requests that are to be prioritized based on prioritization in the past. Once the type has been identified, the slot allocation model is then employed to reduce the delay criteria. However, many research gaps have been discovered related to the optimization of slot scheduling models, especially when the balance between fairness and efficiency is being maintained.
ABC (assigned based on velocity) is a well-known method for prioritizing slot allocation. This strategy collects item information and then determines an appropriate grouping based on the velocity. Items that have the highest speed are allocated the top slots in the warehouse, whereas items with lower speeds are assigned to the behind.
The distance factor is another crucial element in the slot's efficiency. It determines the amount of space needed to support the pick-to ship process. The calculation considers the speed of the group, racking locations, and equipment handling characteristics of the products.
To increase slot efficiency, it is also important to consider the cost of any slot change. A quick look at a typical slot change can aid managers in determining the costs associated with the move, and also the impact it could have on other elements of slot efficiency, such as velocity.
After a couple of months reviewing the data, and then re-dating the recommendations, the casino started using the system more often. The gaming operations team estimates that they can save between 10 and 12 hours per month by using their usual analysis. This does not include the time spent reviewing the data of customers or developing a new, effective strategies.
The team was able, using the new recommendations provided by SRE to make dozens game changes that resulted in more revenue for players. Dancing Drums Explosion, and Twinstar Wave XL from Scientific Games saw significant gains in the premium lease rankings and WAP rankings. The casino was also able to shift its budget from marketing to other expenses and increase the floor's performance.
Perimeter Efficiency
We all know wide receivers score more touchdowns when they are in a position to hit perimeter targets rather than slot targets. This is due to the fact that they are typically targeted downfield, and often are in one-on-one coverage. But what might surprise people is the different between the top five slot receivers and the rest of them in scoring on those perimeter targets.
Of the 66 wide receivers who have seen at least 40 targets each of the two seasons, the top five slot scorers on the perimeter routes were all speed receivers: Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, Tyler Lockett and Michael Gallup. The bottom of this list is dominated by players who are more possession-based such as Chris Godwin and Diontae Johnston. The Bucs are likely to move the latter two into the slot more often during this season, which should increase their targets. However, they'll have to improve their scoring on the perimeter to maintain their top-of-the-line performance.
The slot is the ideal option for wideouts who are quick, since they are able to open more easily when their route won't be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who isn't a fast wideout, but could benefit from more slot work. He's a solid player for intermediate and short routes.
Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the bottom of the list. They're better on short and intermediate routes rather than in deep areas. Jeudy is a solid option to be a sleeper for this season since the Rams' primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are expected to play on more downfield targets. Hamler should be able to excel on intermediate and short-to middle routes, given that's exactly the way he performed in 2021 while playing for the Bills. Hamler could be a fantastic replacement for the former wideout Jordan Matthews.
Percentage of Snaps In Slot
The percentage of snaps that a receiver takes in the slot can be a good indicator for their ability to run routes that are deep. However, it's not always a true representation of a receiver's abilities because certain receivers excel in the slot but cannot play deep, and vice versa.
For example for instance, the Eagles Alshon Jeffery is the leader in the league in the number of targets per game (4.8) but is only placed sixth in the slot receiving score (58.5). This is because the majority of his targets come from outside, and it's a challenge to get a first down when playing an open, deep route.
Certain receivers are better playing inside, while others struggle on the outside. Robby Anderson, for instance was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He logged 74% of his routes in the slot, as opposed to only 26% on boundary routes. This is a huge distinction and demonstrates how much more productive Anderson is when he's aligned with the slot.
Additionally there is the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs and has a top five slot receiving score (58.5). However he also ran 51 percent of his perimeter routes last season, and is a star in one-on-one coverage.
Speed receivers are usually more efficient when they line up inside, as they can get targeted way down the field and often find themselves with one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll find names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper in the top five on our list.
On the flip side, we've got some great slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able create pressures during the pass game, with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles. Moore having the best payouts slots tackle stop performance on this list (-3.5). By deploying McDuffie in the slot when they are running nickel or dime packages, and then deploying him on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his abilities. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is a huge asset when playing the slot.
Percentage of Snaps Outside
While top NFL receivers such as Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald, and Baldwin excel on the perimeter however, their slot counterparts are also just as good. Wide receivers with high slot grades score touchdowns about the same as those on the outside. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent in their targets when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers rather than other inside options like backfield passers and tight ends.
It's therefore interesting to see a player like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of them. In fact, he's running a higher number of slot routes than most of the players listed on this list. This is a great way to create matchup benefits for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is rated as the top-rated slot receiver in our system this season.
Of course, he also plays the X position, and makes some big plays from the perimeter as well. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the players in this list, but he's still highly skilled and is an excellent fit for the Cowboys scheme.
Mecole Hardman is another example of a player capable of putting up big numbers on both kinds of targets. He has a high slot receiving grade and is among the best players in the league at catching back-shoulder throws, but he's also a great opponent for contested catch.
Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps so far this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA for cornerbacks that are aligned in the slot, making him a crucial player in the defense of his team. On the contrary, he's been unable to block passes from the outside and has allowed the negative EPA against these kinds of targets. This is a result of playing with subpar linebackers and safeties that can't match up with Hilton's size, speed and route-running ability.
